M4 Mac Mini’s USB-C Ports No More Connecting Devices
We have all been thrilled by the new M4 Mac mini’s tiny size and computing power, but many early users have been perplexed by a USB-C connecting issue.

Posts on several forums by users who purchased the Mac mini but are experiencing problems with linked USB-C devices were noticed by Apple Insider. Frequently, the gadgets malfunction or cease to function altogether. Reddit, MacResource, and the Apple Support Community have all featured posts. None of the other M4 Macs that were launched at the same time seem to be impacted by the problem.
Back USB-C Port Issues
One trend throughout the several posts is that people are utilizing a USB-C adaptor on a back Thunderbolt/USB-C port to connect USB-A devices. When they move to a front USB-C port, the gadgets function normally, although they have erratic communication. Issues with devices that use the back ports for power are reported by certain users. Reconnecting the device after disconnecting it resolves the issue in some situations.
M4 Mac Mini Without USB-A Ports
When Apple redesigned the Mac mini with a slimmer design, it eliminated the USB-A ports that were included in the M2 Mac mini. As a result, USB-C-to-USB-A converters.
The Mac mini’s front connectors, which are merely USB-C ports and not Thunderbolt ports, appear to be unaffected by the issues. Given the multipurpose nature of the back ports, this could indicate a communication issue between adapters. The signal that the back ports need to establish a connection may not be maintained by the adapters.
Resolution
Apple has not yet addressed the matter. Use items from reliable manufacturers, like Apple’s own line, if you must use a USB-A to USB-C converter to connect a device to a Mac. On Amazon, it’s simple to discover inexpensive adapters from businesses with absurd names, but in our experience, it’s worth the few additional bucks to buy goods from reputable businesses.
