OpenAI is getting closer to ChatGPT with computers and has increased the number of apps that its desktop apps can operate with, including enabling Advanced Voice Mode to integrate with other apps.
In November 2024, the desktop application debuted connections with four apps. OpenAI revealed a number of additional text applications, terminals, and integrated development environments (IDEs) that it would support on Day 11 of its “12 Days of OpenAI” event.
The JetBrains family of IDEs, including CLion, Android Studio, AppCode, GoLand, DataGrip, IntelliJ IDEA, PyCharm, PHPStorm, RustRover, RubyMine, and WebStorm, as well as MatLab, BBEdit, Script Editor, Nova, VS Code, and TextMate for VSCode Insiders, VSCodium, Cursor, and WindSurf, are now supported by ChatGPT. Additionally, it integrated the Warp and Prompt terminal programs. These programs integrate with iTerm 2, Terminal, VS Code, Xcode, and TextEdit.
However, ChatGPT desktop apps can access more than only coding programs. Additionally, OpenAI expanded its connections to include Quip, Notion, and Apple Notes. These apps are compatible with Advanced Voice Mode, which takes into account the integrations’ project context.
Users must provide ChatGPT permission to access these apps, according to OpenAI.
Undoubtedly, app connections with AI chatbots are not new. GitHub Copilot introduced interfaces with coding platforms in October. Applications can integrate context from ChatGPT or Copilot into the chat experience by connecting to them. Developers may ask ChatGPT for coding assistance for a project they’re working on in Visual Studio Code, and the chatbot is aware of what they’ve been working on.
When using other apps on MacOS, users may use “option + space” to launch ChatGPT and select the program they require from a button on the chat screen. “Option + shift + 1” is another shortcut that opens the most recently used program.
Users may use the same method to access Advanced Voice Mode from that window. The application’s context is automatically detected by voice mode.
Users of ChatGPT Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu can integrate. Enterprise and Edu users, however, need to request that their IT administrators activate the service.
AI start-up supported by Microsoft For its ChatGPT app for Mac, OpenAI has released new capabilities that allow for connectivity with a number of third-party programs. Note-taking applications like Apple Notes and Notion are supported, as are development programs like Android Studio, AppCode, PyCharm, RubyMine, and others.
By granting users access to on-screen material from various apps, the enhanced ChatGPT Mac program enables context-aware answers. In a demonstration, ChatGPT showed how to create instructions without the need for manual copying and pasting by extracting context from the Warp application. Additionally, OpenAI revealed that developers may now code in the o1 and o1 Pro modes.
In an update, a separate “Work with Apps” button has been added under the text field in the update. A list of suitable programs that are presently running is displayed when you click this button. From this list, users can choose an app, allowing ChatGPT to retrieve context from that particular app while answering questions. OpenAI said that no information is retrieved until specifically requested by the user and that data is only accessible via the app of choice.
Only Plus, Pro, Team, Enterprise, and Edu users may access the on-screen awareness feature in the ChatGPT Mac app’s beta edition. According to OpenAI, this capability will be added to the ChatGPT software for Windows and free users in the upcoming year.
Hence, with its growing integrations and context-aware capabilities, the ChatGPT Mac App is revolutionizing desktop productivity and is becoming an indispensable tool for developers and professionals.
