The iMac G4, Apple’s compact personal computer, was the most stylish computer available when it was first released in 2002. With a white/apparent plastic display affixed to a hemispherical base that housed the components, the iMac G4 was a quirky contrast to your average squarish-beige-box PC.
Although the iconic iMac G4 is no longer in use (except as a memento of devotion in enthusiasts’ basements), Apple may introduce a comparable model next year, at least externally.
Apple’s anticipated smart home display will resemble the iMac G4 in most ways, as reported by Mark Gurman of Bloomberg. It will have a display linked (at an inclination) to a compact base that may be “similar to the spherical bottom of the iMac G3 just a couple of decades ago.”
The base may have speakers, making the gadget resemble a screen-equipped HomePod (mini?). However, Gurman asserts that the screen will be modest, “about the dimension of two iPhones side by side.” Because of its modest size, this gadget should be “relatively cheap,” allowing users to have it across multiple rooms of their house. Additionally, according to Gurman, the tablet would use a new operating system with iPad-like applications including Notes, FaceTime, and Calendar, but it will be primarily designed for slideshows of images and movies. That means just a little touch of everything.
This smart home display will function as a portal for smart home controls, present photo and video slideshows, and run various iPad-like applications appropriate for its intended use, such as FaceTime, Notes, and Calendar. According to Gurman, it is “possible” that the device’s base will have speakers, enabling it to function similarly to a Home Pod.
In addition to this first smart home display, Gurman has already detailed a more complex product that would have a bigger screen on an arm with robots that could recognize individuals and follow them about the room remotely. That more expensive device won’t be available until 2026 at the latest, and it will probably sell for about $1,000.
The G4 has excellent ergonomics in addition to being an attractive gadget. You were able to place the display just where you desired it thanks to the floating arm. It may tilt up to 35 degrees vertically, revolve 180 degrees laterally, and be elevated or decreased by up to seven inches.
With over six million sales revenues in the two years it was available, the machine was also a major commercial success, as seen by the 400% increase in AAPL’s price per share during that time.
Apple’s planned Smart Home Display is one example of how the heritage of the iMac G4 continues to influence future designs. It keeps influencing how technology will develop by fusing fashion and functionality.
