Apple Unveils Artificial Intelligence at WWDC 2024

During the keynote address of the Worldwide Developers Conference (WWDC) 2024, on Monday, Apple revealed several significant announcements on Artificial Intelligence (AI) technologies collectively referred as “Apple Intelligence.” CEO Tim Cook opened the event by announcing that “intelligence” upgrades will be shared after it. Cook mentioned Apple Intelligence at the start of the AI section; this seems to be the Cupertino-based tech giant’s approach to incorporating generative AI into its products.

Apple’s Artificial Intelligence (AI) or Apple Intelligence

With a focus on the five pillars of Apple Intelligence, i.e. powerful, integrated, intuitive, personal, and private. Apple introduced new writing tools driven by generative AI that can rewrite text across applications and devices and summarize material.

Apple promises “on-device intelligence,” which is essentially on-device processing utilizing the device’s chipset, to explain the privacy focus of Apple Intelligence. Large AI models, according to the business, would demand more processing power. However, Apple just launched Private Cloud Compute, an encrypted cloud service that balances privacy with robust AI capabilities.

Apple Using Its Server Chips for AI

During its yearly developer conference on Monday, Apple revealed that it will leverage its M2 powered server CPUs to enable artificial intelligence functions on its devices. Also, planning to put together M4-powered AI servers by the end of 2025.

Apple Introduces Image Playground: An AI Image Generator

Apple has released a new Image Playground tool as part of Apple Intelligence, which enables users to instantly generate generative photographs using a variety of concepts including themes, costumes, accessories, locations, and more.

Users may easily create amusing pictures with Image Playground by selecting one of three styles: animation, illustration, or sketch. Simple to use, Image Playground is integrated into applications such as Messages and may also be downloaded separately.

The addition of image-generating capabilities to iOS 18 devices is another one of the AI-powered improvements. This function will be activated in applications like Pages, Keynote, Messages, and Freeform. Although users won’t be able to produce realistic photographs, they may still produce creative images in various styles. The photographs in the user’s gallery will serve as the foundation for the generation of these images.

This feature functions something like a Bitmoji with enhanced AI. It is, of course, to make your “everyday conversations more enjoyable”.  

Apple TV+

For all of those who subscribe to Apple TV+, InSight is a new function. Watchers will be able to learn song titles and actor names as they appear on screen thanks to this function. According to Lauren Forristal, it’s comparable to Amazon’s X-Ray technology, which allows Fire TV viewers to access actor biographies and behind-the-scenes material while viewing TV series and films.

Apple Intelligence-Powered Siri Gets New Capabilities

Siri is undergoing a significant AI transformation, as was previously revealed. Understanding the context is the primary component of the update. Now, the virtual assistant can decode natural language and ambiguously spoken words to determine their underlying meaning. Siri which is driven by AI will also be integrated with several native Apple apps. Siri will be able to use voice commands to perform actions within the applications thanks to this connection. When asked to “make the image glow,” for instance, Siri may open a photo in edit mode and apply contrast and brightness.

According to Apple, Siri will have the ability to understand and perform tasks that it has never performed before. In a demonstration, Siri uses an email with the travel details to cross-check to determine the answer to the question, “When will my mom’s plane land?” Siri’s updated functionality and appearance will be available for use on iPhone, iPad, and Mac devices.

Integration of ChatGPT with Apple Devices

Apple announced cooperation with OpenAI’s ChatGPT, extending its AI ecosystem to include third-party products. It won’t be necessary for free users to log in or for their information to leave the device in order to utilize ChatGPT. The ability to link accounts to the platform will be available to paid customers. It will work with all Apple gadgets as well.

In-App Apple Intelligence Features

Apple Intelligence has improved the Photos app’s Memories function. Based on the description, the AI feature will choose the finest images and videos automatically and create a narrative. Additionally, a new Clean Up tool has been added to the Photos app, which allows you to eliminate unsightly background items without changing the subject of the picture. This is comparable to Galaxy AI’s Object Eraser and the Magic Eraser seen on Google Pixel smartphones.
